I see it all the time; long slow running either around a track or on concrete ending up with players boasting about how many miles they covered. Let me make it clear- long distant running, in fact anything over a 1/2 mile all at once is an absolute waste of time and in fact detrimental to any soccer player looking to get fitter and faster.

Soccer speed

While being able to run a lot without tiring is important, especially for midfielders, being fast is important as well. The more conditioned you are to run a two mile fast, the slower you will be in a sprint. Does that mean everyone who runs good 2 miles are slow sprinters? No. But for the individual, I can almost guarantee you that the faster you get your 2 mile time the slower your short sprint speed becomes. The 2 mile requires high levels of aerobic capacity which also means slow twitch muscle characteristics. Sprinting depends on fast twitch muscle characteristics. Lifting weights, jumping, and sprinting with high intensities will get you faster while jogging or running at a slow pace for a long time will make you slower. While running long distance can be a great mental exercise, there are better ways.

Then how am I supposed to reach a high level of soccer fitness?

While I think you can only play yourself into shape so much, there is also no way to do fitness that will mimic the game itself. So, do both. Fitness wise, I recommend interval training and obstacle courses where you have to sprint, change directions, jump, sit down, crawl, etc. One example of interval training is to run as far as you can in 10 seconds, then walk 10 seconds. Repeat that 10 times. That's just an example... the sky is the limit. Another good one is to combine movements in a circuit such as burpees, squats, runs, hops, etc. Be creative and make up circuits where you try to beat your teammates 3 times through it or get as many rounds as you can in an allotted time.

Basically, train how you want to play. The days of long and slow running are gone.
